Bohar Gate – Inner City Multan

Bohar Gate – Inner City Multan

Bohar Gate is one of the six remaining historic gates of the old walled city of Multan. It is located on Hassan Parwana Road in the inner city, surrounded by busy markets and traditional streets. The name “Bohar” was derived from the large number of Bohar trees that once grew near this gate. It was originally oriented toward the Ravi River, which was an important trade and communication route for the city in earlier times. The gate has long served as an entrance to the heart of Multan’s ancient bazaars and neighborhoods, representing the city’s vibrant history and cultural life.

Architectural Beauty & Features:

Architecturally, Bohar Gate consists of two double-storeyed towers connected by a flat archway. The structure is simple in design, built with local materials, and has gone through several repairs over the years. The exterior has been plastered and whitewashed multiple times, giving it a modest yet historic appearance. Surrounding the gate are narrow streets and small shops, which make it a part of everyday urban activity. Despite encroachments and modern developments, the gate still retains its original form and remains a recognizable landmark of the old city.

Visitor Experience:

Visitors to Bohar Gate experience a mix of history and daily life. The area is always bustling with people, traders, and traditional markets selling local goods, spices, and textiles. Walking through the gate feels like stepping back into Multan’s past, as its walls and streets still echo the city’s ancient charm. Although the area can be crowded, it offers an authentic glimpse of Multan’s living heritage, where centuries-old architecture stands beside modern commercial life.

History

Bohar Gate was originally constructed in 1756 during the rule of Ali Muhammad Khakwani as part of the fortified wall surrounding the city of Multan. It played an important role in the city’s defense and trade routes. During the siege of Multan in 1848–49, the gate sustained damage but was later rebuilt by the British authorities in 1854. Since then, it has undergone several renovations to maintain its structure. Today, Bohar Gate stands as one of the few surviving entrances to the old city, symbolizing Multan’s resilience and long-standing historical significance.
